Just when I thought I was getting techy *UPDATED!*

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

After last week’s successful move of my old blog to my new and improved blog, which required reading directions several times and exporting and importing and much wringing of hands, I thought that this bloggy tech stuff wasn’t going to be too hard after all.

That was until one of my BFFs told me she tried to subscribe to my blog and got an error message.  I thought it had gone to one of those big old long pages of code rather than a self-explanatory page with instructions.  Since I’m so much more techy than she is I told her that I’d get it set up for her.

The first thing I did was check my RSS feed button.  Because a little voice in my head piped up when I thought about how techy I was getting.  It didn’t exactly say anything in words, but I clearly heard a “Pffsh!” and I got the distinct impression of eye-rolling.  So I thought I’d better check my feed button just in case.

Yep.  Doesn’t work.  Apparently what I had figured out how to do was put the picture of the cute little orange button on my sidebar.  But it doesn’t do a thing.  It just goes to an error page.  Not a page of code.  Just a plain old 404-page not found.

Well, at least I’m techy enough to know that that means my button isn’t connected to anything at all.  It’s just a picture.   Sigh…

Hopefully I’ll get this figured out next week.

*UPDATE!* – My hubby got up this morning and fixed my RSS feed button thingy (technical term).  So if anyone wants to subscribe, it will now actually work.  Yay!

Oh My Gosh! That totally worked!

It really was easy.  I’m stunned.  I was expecting to completely blow everything up.  It took all of about a minute too.

I’ll be darned.

Well, my previous bloggy request still stands.  The ugly theme will soon be replaced by something cute and/or sassy.  Depending on my husband’s patience with the number of themes I want him to download so I can test drive them.

For now, just pretend that I just moved into a new house.  With gray walls.  And a blue ceiling.

Pay No Attention to the Ugliness

I’ve restarted my blog, and I’ve got PLANS people!  I’ve got themes picked out and everything.  Now I just need to get my Hubby to download them to our server.  Because he keeps the server in his office at our house.  A room with gazillions of wires, computers and other techy stuff.  I’m afraid to touch anything in there.

I’ll also be importing my old blog.   At least I hope so.  I  hear it’s the easiest thing in the world.  So we’ll see.   There are a couple of good gluten-free recipes there  – like cupcakes and graham crackers.  So I hope the transfer goes without a hitch.

Found it and Nicknames

I haven’t been blogging lately.  First we had some sort of computer problem.  Then my darling husband did some sort of computery mumbo-jumbo and fixed it.   But either he didn’t tell me how to get to it or I didn’t hear him tell me (guess which one is my version).  Then we all got sick.  Now everything has been fixed and communicated and here I am back in blogland.  Yay!

While I’ve been away from blogland, I’ve been giving bloggy security some thought.   When I had my other blog, which I will import here at some point, I had decided that I was not only not going to use my husband and kids’ real names or mention where we live, but I wasn’t going to use pictures either.  Because I’m stealthy like that.

After thinking about it for a long while, I decided that I want to start using pictures.  I talked to Hubby about it and he agreed that using pictures would be fine.   But I still want to use nicknames for my kids and my husband rather than their real names.  Because it’s safe AND fun.

Here’s the problem.  I tend to be very logical and not very creative.   My usernames in all the websites I’m part of are various variations of my name or my name and my last initial.   When I was little, I never even named my dolls because it was too much to deal with.  If the doll was lucky enough to come pre-packaged with a name on the box, that was her name.  Other than that, she was out of luck.

So when I say I’ve been thinking about nicknames for a long time, I mean a LONG time.   But I finally figured it out.

My almost 6yo daughter is such a spark of sunshine that I want her nickname to really say something about her personality.  She’s the happiest child I’ve ever seen.   She’s also very active.  She loves to run and be moving.  She’s not hyper, she just likes the wind in her hair.  A nickname like Princess or something like that just wasn’t going to cut it.   So I started thinking about what kind of animals are like my little girl and I finally thought of one – a Wild Filly.   If my daughter were to be any animal and be able to express her personality to the utmost, that’s what she would be – a Wild Filly.   Running on the open plains.

My 4yo son is a lot like his sister, but he’s a few notches down in energy.  (Aren’t we all?)  He loves to follow her around and play.  She’s always doing something adventurous and he’s right behind her.   So his nickname is Colt.  Running right behind his sister.

Now, you might think that I’d keep with the horse theme for Hubby and I, but that’s not going to happen.  It’s not that Hubby would object to being called Stallion, but that I’d object to being called Mare.  So until I think of a nickname for Hubby, he’s just going to be Hubby for now.   As for me, I think I’ll just use my name.
